Today was Trog's great crab feast at Ernie's. See, Trog won a dozen jumbo crabs on Beirne's ticket when UVA defeated Ole Miss in the College World Series. Wow. I came for just a few minutes, well after most of the hoopla. Uncle Beirne gave me a mug of beer and made a few indiscreet speculations on a topic most people would consider too private for a familiy restaurant like Ernie's. I heard that later he demanded 4 Ernie's T-shirts - probably hoping that the entire event would become the stuff of legends.

June 10, 2009

Back at the Reds-Nationals game. This time we stole seats in the 200-level. A woman came just in time for the start of the 4th. She had tickets for seats 5, 6, and 7. Her pal was already in 7. I was in 5. 6 was open. She wanted 5. (It was her seat after all.) My friend moved to 3. I moved to 4. She sat in 5. 6 was open. Her friend stayed in 7.

Why did this lady have such weird toes? Why did she put them up over the back of the chair, on display? Why didn't we get up and find new seats altogether?

Hard telling, not knowing.

Yo, today was fine. I had two sandwiches for lunch. One was from last night and one was from this morning. They both went well with my cherry yogurt.

The baseball game was rain delayed until 8:50. We sat under the bleachers and ate burgers and fries. The sun was setting and the sky over left field was glowing all purple and pink. A stray cirrus cloud gleamed in the face of the approaching dark.

This epic battle between day and night turned blood red, and I said "I think it's like God commenting on the rampant sin in the capital area. The lone cirrus is like his tear of sympathy for the Hell that surely awaits us all."

My friend looked at me. "I think it's smog."

Yo, things are pretty good right now.

Crazy, isn't it? Sometimes you wake up after a little sleep and feel great...and sometimes you wake up after a lot of sleep and feel like death.

This morning I got an early cab so I could watch Jimmy Jam take second in a road race out in Fairfax. Yea boy!

Tonight The Hold Steady played a concert. The second song they played was Party Pit - That's when things got ruckus. After that there was no looking back. At the end of the night, the singer's parting words were: "Washington, DC...Brooklyn, New York....United States of America...Until next time we are all...The Hold Steady."

June 6, 2009

Wow, a fine day. I had a real breakfast - pancakes, eggs, fresh fruit, and orange juice.

Later, I found my car keys right where I had left them - in the ignition of my locked car. The locksmith's tattoo was a spider web on his bicep and a black widow on his forearm. He had a wispy goatee. His pants began right about where his boxers ended. I wondered what his most recent girlfriend looked like. Hopefully smelly and overweight, but it's tough to say.

This is what I've been staring at all week:

"Things turn out best for people who make the best of out of the way things turn out."

John Wooden said that. He's from Martinsville, Indiana. I'm from Franklin, Indiana.

John Wooden is a renown basketball coach. He won more NCAA championships than any other coach. He is known for teaching his players to be every bit as good of people off the court as on. He coaches Loyalty and Integrity.

He is known for telling Bill Walton to cut his hair, and for beginning each season with a stern lecture on shoes and socks.

The popular sportswriter Rick Riley once wrote a poignant column on John Wooden's enduring dedication to one woman, his late wife Nellie. In this column is the statement, "There's never been a finer man in American sports than John Wooden, or a finer coach."

So I followed Coach Wooden's guidance... Though somehow I think he would be disappointed.

Wow, today was a pretty good day. You know, the kind of day in which my lunch is a peanut butter and nutella sandwich. And the kind of day in which my dinner is a cup of fries.

The DC United played tonight at RFK Memorial Stadium. It rained on all the fans, but spirits stayed high. When DC scored late in the 1st, fans threw beer up in the air. I'm told this is commonplace.

Alex Dukes came to the game with me. He's a good guy. You'd be remiss to not get to know him if you have the chance.

Drink up my friend.

He's thirsty!

June 3, 2009

Wow, today was an alright day. Aren't they all?

I was caught in the rain under an awning this evening. I watched people run from buildings into cars, or sometimes from cars into buildings. A woman's paper grocery bag tore, and groceries spilled onto the sidewalk. I rushed into a nearby restaurant for a new bag. For a brief moment I was a hero.

But then I had to do something else. I walked home in the rain. It was the most difficult 20 minutes of my life. I swear.

At least life is long. And there are always good people and good friends. I'm excited about what's next - and I hope you are too.

Listen, things might just spiral out of control from here.

Here's why: I was able to finish several loads of laundry but not able to fold them. I ate a bowl of cereal but couldn't wash the bowl. I was able listen to voicemails but not return calls. I guess I'm mostly just sorry but I'm not going to do anything about it.

I was also able to go for a bike ride up toward D.C. Runners on the trail are more fit there. They run faster and more upright.

Before bed I read some of Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and went through a couple stories of my own. It turned out to be a very nice evening.

May 31, 2009

Wow, today was another rough day. We had to put Jessy on a plane back to Indiana. She began the day with half a bottle of champagne, courtesy of Bryan.

First we went to the Inner Harbor, where we ate at a restaurant with outstanding poached eggs and outstanding service. There was a street performer at the harbor cracking on people's clothing. Go there...I'd love to see what he says about the way you dress.

We got back and had a sleepy quiet evening. It's always been sleepy and quiet. It's always been sleepy and. It's always been sleepy. It's always been. It's always. It's

The End

May 30, 2009

Yo, never has a day been quite like today.

This afternoon we went to the container store and Jessy and I picked up a pen pal envelope. Then we rolled down to 3, a bar and restaurant.

We came home to meet Schoener for an O's game against the Tigers. Schoen-dawg brought his girl friend from dental school, Whitney. During the car ride there wasn't a lot of talking. The Tigers won, and we all had fun. During the car ride home, there was less talking.

Then, oh my goodness, Jessy and I left from Alexandria to go to Adam's Morgan. Once we'd scoped the scene a little bit I was convinced I'd learn what a sharp 5 inch blade to the kidney felt like before the night was through. Instead, we found good people to hang out with at 18th and Red's, and had our best night out all week. Perhaps one of the best nights out ever. Perhaps.
